MyBlogLog Steps in ShoeMoney

Not that I pretend to know what in the hell is going on at MyBlogLog with all the security holes being posted, but it looks like they shot the messanger and banned ShoeMoney.

You people at MyBlogLog are out of your fucking minds.

You don't ban people that tell you where your flaws are, you fire all the incompetent programmers that keep making the flaws and thank the customers that use your service for pointing out serious issues before they become a crisis.

I was considering using MyBlogLog but now that I know it's MyFlawedBlogLog with a big chip on their shoulder I think I'll just pass on this bullshit.

They didn't shoot the messenger. They shot the big mouthed idiot who thought it would make him look "cool" to out an exploit/problem rather than let them know directly. Since he is supposedly so close to everyone and has everyones contact phone numbers I'm sure he could have let someone know rather than putting out an exploit which could cause huge problems and loss of users and ultimately the end of the service.

Just because you earn a lot of money and have a lot of blind followers doesn't mean you're not accountable for your actions.

Think about this in the context of being a reporter. ShoeMoney in the context of reporting a story has no responsibility to the newsworthy party to alert them about the story in advance.

If he did indeed have personal contacts at MyBlogLog it wouldn't have hurt to let them know. It sounds like he was banned for personal reasons overall.

However, when a software company or website has such thin skin that they ban people putting their product to the test, even if they post a negative item about an exploit, it's a really bad sign. Just wait and see what happens when a serious hacker finds an exploit and uses it for months before it the exploit becomes publicly known, that can get ugly.

Good, bad or indifferent of how the exploit posting went down, ShoeMoney did them a service letting this bug be known. Naybe it could've been handled better, but I'm still with ShoeMoney on this one.

If you're going to put your product on the web you might as well face the fact you'll get good press and bad press, it's a fact of life.

Banning someone that gives you a little bad press just makes it WORSE press and MyBlogLog lost some street cred in the process.

No he doesn't HAVE to report it, it's called manors or courtesy.

He didn't put it to the test, he openly exploited it and led others to do the same, this kind of action is what can bankrupt a business.

There is no excuse for his actions.

Writing shitty code and badly overreacting to situations in the public eye is what drives customers away and can bankrupt businesses.

Rolling with the punches and keeping a positive spin is how you keep your customer base.

Ask yourself this, which hurt MyBlogLog most, the fact that ShoeMoney posted an exploit or when MyBlogLog publicly made him a martyr?

If you picked the latter you're getting a clue.
